The Electric Falcon, an open-wheel, Indy-type, battery-powered race car is capable of speeds well over 100 MPH. Built and raced by the College of Technology at Bowling Green State University (Ohio), the Electric Falcon competes in the national University Spec class.

The Lincoln AC motor used in the Electric Falcon has been modified to deliver over 145 peak horsepower, approximately 10 times the nameplate rating of a standard AC motor of the same size operating on electric utility alternating current.

The Electric Falcon uses solid-state technology to convert DC current from 1,200 Lbs of batteries to the AC current that powers its induction motor. AC current eliminates the arcing and brush maintenance problems of conventional DC systems used in golf carts, airport shuttles and other battery-powered vehicles.

An experimental car developed by General Motors to set an electric vehicle land-speed record utilizes similar AC drive technology and holds the record of over 183 MPH.

The BGSU electric vehicle development program began in 1993 with preparations to compete in the Cleveland Electric Formula Classic in conjunction with the Budweiser Grand Prix of Cleveland. Utilizing a standardized Formula Lightning chassis, a team of students, faculty and industrial partners including Lincoln developed, tested and installed the battery-powered drive train.

This ongoing College of Technology project has involved more than 350 students to date in "cutting edge" technology and raised the image and visibility of technology programs at BGSU, a Western Ohio institution with over 18,000 students.

Historically, auto racing has contributed to the development of new automotive technology. The University Spec class is one of several competitions, operated by Electric Vehicle Technologies Competitions, Phoenix, AZ, to facilitate electric vehicle development. Other racing classes include the High School Challenge Series, Street Stock, Super Stock and others.
